FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We've put together some frequently asked questions to give you more information about ProPreg™, and how you can implement it on your farm.
ProPreg™ is an intravaginal probiotic gel containing three native and beneficial Lactic Acid Bacteria that are abundant in the reproductive tract of healthy cows. When administered intravaginally to a cow before and after calving, this probiotic gel helps to restore and maintain a healthy balanced reproductive microbiome. The shelf-stable gel also contains prebiotics and a patent pending formulation to assure gel retention and probiotic engraftment. The ready-to-use 300mL cartridge contains 28 doses for 7 calvings.
ProPreg™ is NOT a treatment nor a drug for metritis. It is a natural product to assure the presence of a healthy and robust population of native beneficial vaginal bacteria.
As cited in literature, a robust reproductive microbiome reduces the probability of uterine infections.¹ Uterine infections negatively affect the well-being, productivity, and reproductive performance of the cow which ultimately negatively affects the profitability of a farm.

During late pregnancy and after calving, a cow’s immune system is weak due to stress, hormonal, metabolic and physiological changes. Nutritional changes, dry treatments, vaccines, grouping dynamics, and calving itself all disrupt and imbalance the reproductive tract microbiome over the transition period. These events and a disrupted reproductive microbiome may allow opportunistic pathogenic bacteria from the environment to enter, multiply, and establish infection. Proactively introducing ProPreg™ intravaginally before and after calving supports the presence of good bacteria to compete with these pathogenic bacteria, thus maintaining a healthy reproductive microbiome.
As a proactive measure for every cow, it is recommended that ProPreg™ is administered weekly during the critical transition period (2 weeks before expected calving until 2 weeks postpartum). A total of 4 doses is recommended.
Yes, on the surface, four doses sounds like a lot of effort. The key is to establish the presence of ProPreg’s™ probiotics in the reproductive tract before calving. Calving dates are not certain and two administrations assures coverage and engraftment. Post-calving is when environmental bacteria most often gain a foothold. Applying ProPreg™ a few days after calving and a week later during involution helps to eliminate and reduce this potential pathogen load.
ProPreg™ can be easily integrated into your farms’ protocols and routines. Healthy Cow can work with you, your herd advisors, and your veterinarian to establish protocols into your dairy herd management software program (i.e. BoviSync, DC305, PCDart, DHI Plus, etc). The ProPreg™ protocol is usually scheduled for once a week and is typically synced with other procedures.
There is no withdrawal period for milk or meat.
We recommend appropriate restraint during ProPreg™ administration such as using feed bunk headlocks or similar. The method of application is similar to artificial insemination. Administration is intravaginal and not intrauterine. ProPreg™ administration is not painful to the cow.
The applicator tip and external area of the cow should be thoroughly wiped clean and dry using hydrogen-peroxide based wipes and water.
Lubrication can be used if needed.
ProPreg™ should be stored at controlled room temperature 20°-25°C (68°-77°F).
Metritis is the inflammation of the uterus caused by infection with bacteria post-calving. Once a cow has calved their uterus remains open and must return back to it's normal size. Pathogenic bacteria from the environment take advantage of this and enter the uterus to disrupt the reproductive microbiome. The harmful bacteria quickly grows, replicates, and damages uterine barriers, leading to metritis. A healthy and diverse reproductive microbiome is needed to create a strong environment and immune system that readily defends against pathogens and infections.
Metritis has a high incidence rate on dairy farms worldwide and it negatively impacts the cow’s well-being, milk production, reproductive performance, and farm profitability.
